Nature of Christ Bible Study

Bible study notes on the topic of Jesus Christ.

Importance of Doctrine About Christ

Doctrine about Christ is important, since Christ is central to salvation from sin, our hope of eternal life.

Romans 16:17-18 Avoid those who cause division with contrary doctrines.
2 Corinthians 11:2-4 The Corinthians were too willing to put up with false doctrine about "a different Jesus", and a "different spirit".
Galatians 1:6-9 Beware of different gospels other than that of Christ which Paul and the other apostles preached.
1 John 2:22-24 Someone who denies that Jesus is the Christ is an Antichrist.
1 John 4:1-4 Denying Jesus Christ came in the flesh is the spirit of the Antichrist.
1 John 5:1 To be a child of God, we must believe Jesus is the Christ.
2 John 1:9-11 Don't greet or receive someone who doesn't have the true doctrine of Christ.

One God, Yet More Than One

In the Old Testament, "God" is translated from "Elohim", a plural word but with singular verbs.

Genesis 1:26 Creation of Man: "Let Us make man in Our image...".
Genesis 3:22 Punishment on Adam and Eve. "Behold, the man has become like one of Us..."
Genesis 11:7 Confusion of the languages. "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language..."
Psalm 45:6-7 "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever... Therefore God, your God, has anointed you..." Quoted by Hebrews 1:8-9
Psalm 110:1,5 "The Lord said to my Lord..."
Ecclesiastes 12:1 literally, plural "Remember now your Creators".
Isaiah 6:8 "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?"
Isaiah 54:5 literally, plural "Makers".
Daniel 7:13 The Son of man brought to the Ancient of days.
Zechariah 2:6-11 The Lord who was sent to Israel by the Lord of hosts.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
John 17:5 "...glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."
Acts 7:56 Stephen, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!"
Hebrews 1:8-9 "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever... Therefore God, your God, has anointed you..." Quoting Psalm 45:6-7
Hebrews 5:5-10 Jesus was sent by God, and given a High Priest role by the Father which Jesus didn't take on Himself.

Jesus is the son of God.

One With the Father

John 1:1
John 8:29; 14:7-11 If you've seen Christ, you've seen the Father.
John 10:30 I and My Father are one.
John 17:21-23 Jesus' prayer that believers may be one in the Father and Son, as Jesus and the Father are one.
Colossians 2:2 "...both of the Father and of Christ."

God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

This pattern is repeated many times in the New Testament scriptures.

Romans 1:7; 15:6
1 Corinthians 1:3
1 Corinthians 8:6 ...there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ...
2 Corinthians 1:2-3; 11:31
Galatians 1:3
Ephesians 1:2-3,17; 5:20; 6:23
Philippians 1:2; 2:11

2 Timothy 1:2
Titus 1:4
Philemon 1:3
1 Peter 1:3 God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 John 1:3

Angel of the Lord, but Not an Angel

The Old Testament talks about the "Angel of the Lord", which KJV etc translators have put with capital A since the circumstances of the passage indicate this was God, not a created angel:

Genesis 16:7-11 Hagar.
Genesis 22:11-18 Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac.
Genesis 31:11 Jacob and Laban's flocks.
Genesis 48:15-16 Jacob's blessing on Ephraim and Manasseh.
Exodus 3 The Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses via the burning bush. The text describes God as "the Angel of the Lord [Yahweh]", God, and the Lord [Yahweh].
Judges 2:1-5 Rebuke to Israel for not driving out the inhabitants of Canaan.
Judges 6:11-24 Gideon.
Hosea 12:3-6 Recounting Jacob wrestling with God/"the Angel" in Genesis 32:22-32 which describes Jacob wrestling with God.
Acts 7:38

The Hebrew word translated "angel" can also mean "messenger". This is consistent with Jesus Christ being the "Word of God", the divine messenger, the mediator between God and humanity.

Hebrews 1

A Prophet Like Moses

Deuteronomy 18:15-19
Acts 3:22-23; 7:37
Hebrews 3:1-6 Jesus was like Moses, but greater than Moses because "He who built the house has more honour than the house. For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God."

Existed Before Human Birth

John 1:1 Existed "in the beginning" with God.

Eternal

Psalm 90:2 Creator is from everlasting.
Micah 5:2 The Messiah is from eternity.
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." If Jesus was God, then He is eternal.
John 8:56-58 "I AM" referring to Exodus 3:14 Hebrews 5:6,10; 7:3,16,21 Melchizedek — no beginning of days. Jesus Christ was made a priest "according to the order of Melchizedek". Jesus has come "according to the power of an endless life". "Remains a priest continually".
1 John 1:2 ...that eternal life that was with the Father...

1 Timothy 3:16 "God was manifested in the flesh..." (Byzantine, majority texts).
Titus 2:13 Should this be read as "(great God) and (Saviour Jesus Christ)", or as "(great God and Saviour) Jesus Christ"? The latter seems to fit the context better. Similar 2 Peter 1:1.
Hebrews 1:8 But to the Son He says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever..."
Hebrews 1:10-12 quotes Psalm 102:25-27 "You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth..." and says it is referring to the Son.
