Dating and pre-humans

What stumps me when it comes to accepting the science of radioactive dating is how to reconcile findings that date fossils such as Homo Habilis to nearly 2 million years ago. How do we account for tool-using hominids that emerge so early? Were they just ultra-smart animals wiped out in a cataclysm, or are they created humans with the spirit of man, mis-identified as another species? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
